Antenatal classes

Classic, back to basics antenatal classes offer learning about pregnancy, birth and the care of a new born baby along with making new friends and sharing experiences.  Weekly classes will allow you to attend without the commitment of a course.  No limit on how many classes you attend.

JOAN MARSHALL

SCM, DipHe Midwifery, Antenatal Leader, Hypnobirth Practitioner

Joan grew up in Newcastle on Tyne, one of 5 children and completed both her State Registered Nursing and Midwifery training there before relocating to Norfolk aged 22.

Joan's nursing journey...

My love of midwifery came early in my training - supporting a very frightened labouring mother to be; just by holding her hand and comforting her she relaxed and trusted me. She went on to have a fabulous birth ( that little one is now over 40 years old) and I have stayed “with woman “ all of my long career.

Teaching antenatal classes when I was a Community midwife for 10 years, I welcomed many babies at home births.  Keeping up to date with midwifery advances, I obtained the Diploma of Higher Education in Midwifery Practice in 2005 and then became part of The Core team establishing a low risk environment for Midwifery led care including water births and taught student midwives the art of a calm birth.

I became a Certified Hypnobirthing Practitioner with the Hypnobirthing Institute - Mongon Method and then achieved a Diploma with the Hypnobirth Midwives UK; both accredited to the Royal College of Midwives. Having learned these techniques I wanted more midwives to be aware of its impact on the birth experience and was able to get funding for 35 other midwives to have hypnobirth training.

Hypnobirth is for everyone whether they are wanting a home birth, low risk birthing unit or are medically supported. My aim is for every birthing family to have the knowledge to achieve a calm birth that is right for them.

I have been teaching hypnobirth for over 8 years and still keep in touch with many couples.  Birth is a Family Centred life event and with this aim in mind I wish to invite other members of the family to small group meetings. i.e. grandparents to be and sibling groups.

For relaxation it is definitely the love of my family that shapes it. My husband, daughters and grandchildren, including the odd bit of canoeing and fishing, all help me. My love of gardening, greenhouse and watching the birds on the feeders keep me grounded.
